This blog is to create awareness about various issues in the field of Health Psychology with an emphasis on how different issues overlap with each other.  Health Psychology is a field that looks at how biological, psychological and social factors influence health and illness. My specific focus is on the intersectionality of mental health disorders, lifestyle diseases, and sexology among immigrant families.  Topics of interest might be geared toward these populations.

North America is well known for its advanced healthcare systems but is healthcare accessible and equal to all? Do healthcare systems in these countries accommodate the influx of immigrants?

My experiences both as a healthcare worker and recipient of healthcare services in North America have given me the motivation to write this blog.

As a healthcare professional, I get to hear so many stories from people from all walks of life, stories that I might never forget.

My passion for looking at how issues overlapped have been more on my own life experiences like the time I went to the doctor and got a prescription for hopping into a plane. You can read that blog at The Prescribed Flight: The need for cultural competency – BNHEALTHMATTERS

So join me in the discussions of what I term as “Intersectional Health”.

So what do I mean by Intersectional health?  It means that health issues will usually overlap with other factors such as risk factors, historical issues, political context, various determinants of health among many other factors, and how they all interlock and have an impact at the individual level.

As health professionals, our interventions need to be where all these issues intersect and as clients or patients, we need to understand that different factors come into play when it comes to specific events/diseases.  It is important to look at issues from an intersectional lens for better health outcomes.  As immigrants, the challenge is even greater as we might need to be more vigilant in advocating for culturally competent services.

So what would I want to achieve with this blog?
