Yap, you heard that right. That’s what one of my dates said during a rendezvous. He was very clear that he would never get into a relationship with a person struggling with Diabetes; a lifestyle disease.
I was flabbergasted with such a comment especially because this person had a health background with credentials a mile long and had a better understanding of those struggling with the illness. Well, I wasn’t about to tell him that I came from a family with a history of this illness.
I grudgingly decided to listen to his views and our conversation made me think long and hard about some issues that healthcare professionals struggle with. And this particular date reminded me of a lesson that I had learned in high school; the importance of understanding the context of a situation before making any conclusions from a single statement/situation.
Listening is a great tool before making conclusions from a single statement
People will make judgments from their own experiences, circumstances, environment, personal background among many other things and sometimes all you can do is just sit and listen to their side of the story. And 20+ years after high school, I had finally understood what my high school teacher had taught about the word “Context”.
What judgments are you about to make from someone’s comments or decisions?
Had you made some conclusions by reading the title on this blog post?
